Rich on 'poverty safari'

Scriptonite Daily March 2014

Boris Johnson’s sister Rachel, privately schooled, Oxford educated, and former editor of the world’s poshest magazine The Lady – has gone on a ‘poverty safari’ to Deptford in South East London, where she reports seeing people ‘live like animals’ and families living on food budgets of just £1 a day. It is difficult to know what is more offensive here; that such poverty exists, or that our country’s ‘finest’ are entertaining themselves with guided tours of Britain’s modern slums.

Capitalism is dying, but something so much better is taking its place- by Kerry-Anne

Some of the most senior representatives of Capitalism are starting to agree – Capitalism is in its death throes. The only way left for it to ‘grow’ is for corporations and national economies to cannibalize themselves. This is unsustainable and untenable. But there’s some good news. The end of Capitalism is not the end of the world – but the beginning of a new, exciting and more equitable one.

Is capitalism past its sell-by date?

Michael Roberts March 2014

Back in September 2012, I wrote a post on whether capitalism is a mode of production that just suffers a series of crises, booms or slumps, or is instead (or also) a system that will eventually break down and collapse when it passes it ‘use-by’ date. I think I still hold to my tentative conclusions in that post(http://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2012/09/12/crisis-or-breakdown/).
